architect (no longer practicing professionally); married; live and work in larkhall on the eastern side of bath; works in charcoal, pastel, watercolour, acrylic and oil from en pleine sketches used for finished studio work. member of the pastel society and invited artist at various locations. for further information, read on......i was born in mitcham in surrey and have loved sketching and painting for as long as i can remember. when i was very young i was featured several times in local newspapers sketching at public events and held impromptu sketching classes for friends but i am far more self-conscious about doing this now! i went to university in cardiff to study architecture and then worked in london, bath, frome, oxford and yeovil as both a job architect, an associate and eventually as a partner and then director . most of my architectural work was for schools (including the royal school and kingswood school in bath, marlborough college and bath university) and hospitals (including taunton,yeovil and exeter) but also included small house extensions (including hillview studio) offices, hotels, libraries and a mosque. by 1999 the lure of pencil and brush became greater than that of architecture, computers and committees with all the stress that came with it. so with encouraging comments from my wife and professionals in the art world and after a few false starts i began a new vocation as a landscape painter. apart form the early influences of an enthusiastic art teacher at wimbledon college, my own technique is largely self-taught with numerous visits to art galleries, reading about my artistic heroes and much trial and error rather than any formal training. after originally loving the art work of roger dean, the work of j.m.w. turner and the watercolourists of the 18th & 19th centuries was my first real lasting influence but i now admire aspects of both the oil paintings of 'the old masters' as well as that of the later 'impressionists.' whilst this covers a wide range of artistic endeavour, my own interest now lies in the 'impressionist' sketch of that which we experience directly from nature (en pleine aire) to the 'impressionist' studio sketch working up an idea and a composition and finally the finished work. the finished work can often be no more than 'studio sketch' but in the end i am happy when the finished painting reflects the original atmosphere i experienced of the place being depicted. my technique, i hope, will constantly evolve, but capturing the atmosphere of a place and quality of light is the goal and finding my own 'voice' is an on-going journey which will only end when i eventually run out of steam. working on a piece of work is always dictated by time, practicalities and mood and therefore my way of working is varied. it will usually involve taking memories and sketches (drawings, paintings, photographs) back to the studio but it may very occasionally mean completing a piece of work 'en-pleine aire' and sometimes it is a combination of the two methods. i have no problem with the use of photography as an efficient method of recording information but i do so because time is often too short to do otherwise. the sketch section in my electronic sketchbook shows work done out on the road. currently i work in charcoal, pastel, watercolour, acrylic and oil but more recently i have begun using a mixture of media. the city of bath and even larkhall are a constant inspiration given the quality of architecture; the light that plays on it and the fact that both places are on the doorstep, but travel, changing seasons and variable weather give me many sources of material. thankfully, the difficulty is always choosing what to paint in the limited time available but there is also the time it takes to try and give a different intepretation of much painted views. since 2017, i have been a member of the pastel society and i have also been a professional member of saa (see www.saa.co.uk ) for a number of years as i am always happy to talk to people interested in seeing how other artists' work. i always emphasise that i am not a teacher of technique as there are those much better equipped to do this. however, i am always happy to discuss my approach to painting and to show work at various stages of completion. i have to say here that the best thing about painting is certainly not a blank canvas or sheet of paper and it is also not the finished painting or the final sale. it is that elusive 'zone' in the painting process that i lose myself in and that keeps me sane, although a good finished result and working 'breaks' in my garden also help. depression is something i live with but work is a distraction that helps to keep me in the moment. as for showing my work, i have made it a rule to never make overtures to any gallery but let them approach me if they see something that inspires them. i know, from experience, that they have many artists approaching them all the time. early on i organised my own exhibitions but currently spend more time submitting work to national exhibitions to reach a wider audience and enjoy working with galleries that invite me to exhibit. to my knowledge, paintings have gone to small private collections in australia, usa, europe, asia and south africa. for details of societies & galleries where work can currently be seen, please go to my gallery and exhibition sections or read my latest update. for more details about my background up until now go to my curriculum vitae. finally, i am one of a growing group of artists in larkhall who opens up their studio (and garden) annually during the larkhall festival held over the first may bank holiday each year (see www.larkhallopenstudios.com ). all are welcome to visit and have a chat and i am always happy to answer genuine emails. if you would like to know more or would like to visit my studio, just drop me a line at anytime to [email protected] . i prefer email to telephones but just reach me anyway you can as i am not a fan of the mobile phone. all the best simon back to beginning curriculum vitae professional education 1977-81 welsh school of architecture, cardiff b.sc architectural science 1st class honours b.arch (wales) distinction 1992-1993 west of england university, bristol m.sc construction management professional qualifications/practice/awards 1978 winner of welsh measured drawing competition 1979 represented welsh school of architecture in national drawing competition 1979-80 architectural practice in wimbledon. work on mosques, offices and private houses 1981-82 architectural practice in victoria, london. work on hotels and private houses 1984 architects registration council of the united kingdom 1985 royal institute of b
